Cleaning flagstone with acid wash

After the flagstone walkway is completed and the mortar has set, it is necessary to wash the stone of its concrete residue and “drippings.”  It’s most common to acid wash the walkway or patio.

Sidewalk washout

One of our customers had an area on the side of their house where the water was washing away dirt from the house.  There are a couple AC units sitting on concrete pads.  Storm water coming out of the gutter was washing away the dirt and silt mixture causing the concrete pad to break apart.  It is very important to stop a washout when it starts before it becomes a very large issue and compromises the foundation.

The concrete pad was one long section, so we jacked up the slab, packed stones and good dirt under the pad, compacted screenings around the area, and reset the stone patio with mortared flagstone.  We also laid black fabric underneath the steps to prevent dirt from washing out in the future. [...]

Crape Myrtle – the follow up post

As a follow up post to yesterday’s article on “crape murder,” here are a couple pictures of some crape myrtles that we pruned earlier today.  Remember, the best time to trim a crape myrtle is in the fall or winter when the plant is in a dormant stage.

1,200 year old oak perishes

A 1,200 year old oak tree perished in the recent harsh winter weather.  The tree is dated back to the 9th century.

The Great Oak at the Gates of the Dead near Chirk was 1,200 years old, dating from the 9th century. According to legend, in 1165, King Henry II of England, preparing to meet Owain Gwynedd in the Battle of Crogen, commanded his men to clear Ceiriog Woods but ordered the Great Oak to be spared.
